Kindergarten registration ongoing

By Jason Stuart

Ranger-Review Staff Writer

The rush of young children into Glendive’s school system looks poised to continue this year.

Jefferson Elementary School  had registered “about 70” children for kindergarten this fall as of last week, according to school secretary Susan Miller.

Miller described the registration numbers as “fairly normal.”

The 70 or so new students currently registered likely don’t tell the whole story, however.

“Then they track in over the summer and we usually get hit in August with people who don’t understand we need the numbers now,” Miller said. “The more accurate the numbers, the better.”

The school needs an accurate count so they aren’t scrambling come fall to hire another kindergarten teacher to accommodate a larger than expected class, according to Miller.

Miller noted that last year, Jefferson registered 75 kindergartners during the registration period. When school started in August, the kindergarten class boasted 115 students.

This year’s kindergarten class continued to grow throughout the year, with the spring enrollment count tallying 124 kids.

Miller requested that anyone who has not registered their child for kindergarten in fall come to Jefferson and do so before the school closes its doors for summer.
