Red Devils lose out at Eastern A tourney

By Kevin Miller

The Red Devil boys lost back to back heartbreakers at the Eastern A basketball tournament this past weekend in Billings. After losing on a last second shot to Miles City on Friday, the Devils fell to Hardin on Saturday morning 67-65.

Tanner Schwartz scored the first bucket of the game to give the Devils a quick 2-0 lead. Glendive would never trail in the first quarter but Hardin did tie the score once at nine. Both teams came out shooting very well and the quarter ended with the Red Devils up 24-21.

Gavin McPherson was especially hot for DCHS in the first period. After the Bulldogs had tie the score McPherson drained a long-range 3 to put the Red Devils up 12-9. This was just the first of four he would hit from beyond the arc in the period.  The fourth bomb put the Devils up 21-15.

Colter Bachmeier also got into the act for Glendive in the opening frame.  After McPherson hit his 4th 3-pointer Bachmeier scored and was fouled. He would convert the three-point play to give the Red Devils a nine-point advantage at 24-15.  The Bulldogs did battle back by scoring the final six points in the first.

Hardin took its first lead of the game less than one minute into the second quarter.  Oliver Wallace and Milo Paz each scored a bucket to give the Bulldogs this lead. This would be the only lead of the half for the Hardin team.

Taylor Schwartz quickly got the lead back for Glendive and Bachmeier followed up with a goal to make the score 28-25.  After Hardin pulled back within one Schwartz was then fouled on a 3-point attempt.  He went to the line and calmly sank all three attempts.

Bryden Boehning, Bachmeier and Tanner Schwartz put together a 6-0 run to give the Red Devils an eight-point lead at 37-29. Boehning scored down low twice and Bachmeier and Schwartz each added a free throw.  Hardin was back within five before Schwartz added two more for Glendive just before the half. At the break Glendive was up 39-32.

The third quarter belonged to the Bulldogs. Hardin scored the first four points of the half and would outscore DCHS 20-12 in the period to take a 52-51 lead entering the final eight minutes of action. Tanner Schwartz netted eight in the 3rd for the Devils. Dominic LaForge and Paz each had a 3-pointer in the third to help Hardin regain the lead.

The Bulldogs extended their lead to five by scoring the first two buckets of the final quarter. McPherson and Bachmeier answered to get the Devils back within one, but then LaForge canned another 3. From here the two teams exchanged two-point goals until Boehning tied the game at 65 with just 45 seconds remaining in the contest.

LaForge scored again to get the lead right back for Hardin but the Devils still had another chance.  The game came down to the final seconds. Boehning put up a shot and was fouled with 2.9 seconds remaining on the clock.  It looked like Boehning’s shot would drop to tie the game, but it just rimmed off. He still had the opportunity to tie with the free throws but the first attempt would not fall. Boehning intentionally missed the second attempt in hopes that the Devils would get the rebound and score, but Hardin was able to keep the ball out of the hands of any Red Devil player. The Bulldogs survived and moved on to the third place game with Billings Central.

The fans for both schools that packed the Fortin Center on the campus of Rocky Mountain College had been treated to an exciting game from the start to finish.

Bachmeier led four Red Devils that reached double figures in scoring.  He scored eight points in the final quarter and ended the game with 18 points. Tanner Schwartz scored eight in the 3rd and wound up with 15. McPherson had the four 3-pointers and finished with 14. Boehning added 12.  LaForge was the game’s top scorer with 22 points. Paz put in 14 for Hardin.
