The Lady Buccaneers reached the semifinals of their Region IX basketball tournament after defeating Otero Junior College on Monday by the final of 88-79.  The Bucs made it to the Monday game after defeating Trinidad State College on Sunday 88-74.

Against Trindad the Bucs had built a 41-28 halftime lead on their way to the 14-point win.  Five DCC players reached double figures in scoring. Janniqua Thomas led the way with 21 points.  Jocelyn Gamboa scored 27 for TSJC. Dawson outrebounded Trinidad 45-24.

Thomas added 16 rebounds to her game resume.  Kendel Wilkerson scored 16 points as well as pulling down eight boards for the Bucs. Haylee Gallegos dished out nine assists to help out in the winning cause. She also scored 10 points. Keely Swander knocked down four 3-pointers for DCC and finished with 12 points. Dawson led throughout the first half and took a 42-35 lead to the halftime intermission against Otero. The Bucs never trailed in the second half but Otero did tie the game at 66. The Rattlers tied the game again at 68 at the eight minute mark. From here DCC went on an 8-0 run to go up 76-68. Otero pulled within four at 80-76 but they would get no closer.

Thomas was 8-8 from the free throw line in the second half and scored 16 of her game-high 31 points after the halftime break.  For the game Thomas was 11-11 from the line and she also grabbed seven rebounds. Gallegos and Evans both scored 13 for DCC. Evans had eight assists, Gallegos seven. Swander was 3-4 from 3-point land and ended the night with 11 points. Wilkerson added to the win with 12 points.

DCC Coach Tracey Clingingsmith was pleased with her teams’ effort.

“Janniqua dominated with 31 points. We lost the battle on the boards but had 22 assists, led by Jacylyn Evans. We shot really well as a team. Swander came up huge behind the arc every time we needed a bucket. Gallegos played the entire 40 minutes and is just the most amazing leader I have ever coached,” Clingingsmith said.

Tuesday evening the Buccaneer women met up with Western Wyoming in the second semifinal contest.
