Senior Tristan Hilgart broke personal track records last Friday placing first in the 800-meter (1:58.55) and third in the 1600-meter (4:31.55) at Glendive’s Jock Stop Invitational. Hilgart dropped his mile time by nearly 12 seconds and has now qualified for state in both events.

Junior Jaley Wyse placed fourth in the 100-meter (a personal record of 13.40), second in the 200-meter (another personal best 26.66), second in the 100-meter hurdles (a season record 16.81) and first in the 300-meter hurdles (46.73). She joined Kendra Zander, Taylor Munro and Kendra Kaufman in placing third in the 4x100 Relay (52.91).

“Tristan and Jaley had excellent performances,” DCHS head coach Mike Dryden said. “That helps their confidence, which helps prepare them to be ready for competition at divisional track meets.”

As Dryden tells it, the Red Devils entered the season “young and untested” with as few as four senior boys and girls. But the team has improved throughout the season and since produced numerous state qualifiers, including Hilgart, Wyse, Emily Kuehn, Karsen Murphy, Kendra Kaufman, Savannah Toms and Jayden Holley.

Overall, both the boys (60) and girls (91) placed fourth among seven competitors.

But, individually, the girl’s lone senior Kendra Zander had “one of her best racing days of the year” placing third in the 100-meter (13.36), third in the 200-meter (a personal record of 27.27) and second in the 400-meter (a season record of 1:03.86).

Other personal records were set by juniors Tyler Clapp (125-05) and Sean-Daniel Taylor (125-01), who “showed improvement” in the discus. Clapp also placed third in the javelin (a season record of 150-02), while Logan Phipps placed sixth in the pole vault (a personal record of 11-06).  Holley, who qualified for state in shot put in the first meet of the season, missed the requirement mark by a mere three inches when placing second with his personal best discus throw (141-09).

This season, the boys and girls relied on a handful of upperclassmen to score points. But the team heads into the Eastern A Track and Field Meet on Friday, with over half of the roster filled with freshmen and sophomores eager to compete.

“I’m looking for the younger athletes to pull a surprise or two and shake things up a little bit,” Dryden said. “They’re ready to put it together and give a good performance.”
