Ceeara Staiger thanked Rich Lindgren, the head tennis coach at Dawson County High School, after capturing the Eastern A singles title on Thursday. Staiger, who edged Madison Chavez of Hardin, 6-0, 6-1, in the final, was congratulated by Lindgren as she received the trophy.

In the first round, Staiger defeated Hallie Banta of Miles City, 6-0, 6-1. She went on to beat Emma Putnam of Billings Central in the quarterfinals, 6-0, 6-1, and Brittney Schaff of Hardin in the semifinals, 6-2, 6-1. Staiger made the transition to singles from doubles this season after capturing two championships alongside alumni Marenah Crockett.

Katrielle Carney and Annie Hill placed second in doubles losing the championship to Hailey Keller and Molly Putnam of Billings Central, 6-2, 1-6, 6-7 (3).

The trio’s success on the court helped the DCHS girls won the tournament scoring 39 points outplaying Billings Central at 38 and Hardin at 37 in Custer County. Lindgren believed this was the closest tournament in recent memory.

“We needed every point earned for the team achievement,” Lindgren wrote in email on Friday afternoon. “This was the best effort of the season to this point.”

For the boys, Jory Opp placed second in singles after losing the final to Simon Marshall of Billings Central, 3-6, 5-7. Last week, Opp beat Marshall, 5-0, when the No. 1 opponent suffered an elbow injury.

In the first round, Opp defeated Christian Bennett of Miles City, 6-0, 6-0. He went on to beat Isaac Birdwell of Billings Central in the quarterfinals, 6-2, 7-5, and Kelly Irion of Miles City in the semifinals, 6-0, 6-1.

Teammate Michael Hopfauf, who Opp hoped to play in the championship, won two matches before losing to Marshall in the semifinals, 4-6, 0-6.

The boys placed third in the tournament scoring 26 points,  trailing  behind Hardin at 35 and Billings Central at 42.

“Jory and Michael played some of their best singles of the year,” Lindgren wrote. “Marshall’s return after his injury skewed the tournament results in favor of Billings Central and it indicated he will be a tournament favorite along with Jory and Michael in singles at the State tournament.”

This season, the boys went 17-9-3 returned seven seniors, while the girls finished 22-6-1. The DCHS players are scheduled to compete in the Class A tournament beginning Thursday, May 25 in Kalispell.
