Lady Devils get revenge on Cowgirls

By Eric Killelea

For Dawson County High School girls basketball coach Kayla Rivas, she knew walking into her team’s locker room that it was going to be a good Saturday night against Miles City.

“The atmosphere was calm, confident and carefree and that is exactly how they played!” Rivas wrote in email. “They took a big step forward … We are better together and our balanced scoring showed that.”

The Lady Red Devils started the game on a 7-0 run and never looked back. They outscored their opponent 42-27 by the third quarter, before falling behind 13-11 in the fourth. But they were far enough ahead to secure the 53-40 victory.

On her senior night, Jaley Wyse of DCHS was not only “a force defensively but she showed a lot of aggressiveness offensively as well,” Rivas wrote. Wyse led her team with 13 points, with Savannah Toms putting up 12 and Karsen Murphy adding 10.

DCHS will compete against Livingston at 12 p.m. Wednesday at the Billings-based 2018 Eastern A basketball divisional tournament. The winner moves on to play Billings Central at 6:30 p.m.

The loser of Wednesday game between Park and DCHS will play at 8 p.m. Thursday.

“We are looking forward to our first round matchup against Livingston,” Rivas wrote. “We have adjusted our defense a little bit to accommodate their size and perimeter shooting, but we will spend the next two days primarily focusing on what we do – and doing it well.”
