Glendive’s 14-15-year-old All-Star Babe Ruth baseball team recently competed at the state tournament that was held in Helena. The Glendive squad, coached by Bob Buxbaum, won its first two ballgames but then dropped its next two. The 2-2 record did not allow the Glendive boys to advance out of pool play.
The opening game for Glendive was Friday, July 11, against Havre. This contest was close throughout but the locals came away with a 7-3 decision over the team from up north. Glendive never trailed in the game but the score was tied at in the second and third innings. A big three-run fourth and then two insurance runs in the seventh carried the Glendive All-Stars to the four-run victory.
Tyler Clapp pitched the first five innings and got the win over Havre. Wyatt Buxbaum pitched two innings in relief. Clapp recorded 11 strikeouts in his five innings pitched. Buxbaum had three hits, including two doubles. Jake Rieger also had three hits for Glendive and he drove in a run. Jayden Holley had an RBI double in the seventh and then scored the last Glendive run on a double by Baxter Baker.
The second contest for Glendive on Friday was a route of Bozeman. The team racked up 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning of play and they were up 14-0 after two. Another 10-run inning in the fourth by Glendive put the game out of reach for Bozeman. The contest ended after five innings with the score 24-6.
Buxbaum, Jory Opp and Holley split the pitching duties. Cade Dockter led the Glendive offense with three hits and four RBIs. David Skerritt had two singles and two RBIs in the 4th. Rieger added a two-run triple.
Bitterroot was just a little too much for Glendive on Saturday. Bitterroot scored seven times to take a 7-0 lead before Glendive could score three times in the top of the fifth. The game ended with Bitterroot on top 10-3.
Clapp started on the mound and went four innings. Buxbaum pitched two innings of relief. Jameson Crisafulli had a big day at the plate for Glendive with three hits. Riley Handran had an RBI single for Glendive and Buxbaum drove in a run with a double.
Glacier ended the baseball season for Glendive with a 12-2 decision. The Glendive team could not get its bats going until the final inning when they pushed across two runs. The game was close at 1-0 through three but Glacier scored 11 times over the final three innings.
Buxbaum started on the hill with Baker throwing an inning in relief of Buxbaum.
“I’m pretty sure the best three teams were in our pool,” said Coach Bob Buxbaum. “Our two losses were to Bitterroot and Glacier and they played in the championship game.”
On the Glendive roster were Ben Stortz, Jesse Goertzen, Jameson Crisafulli, Riley Handran, Cade Dockter, Jayden Holley, David Skerritt, Jake Rieger, Jory Opp, Baxter Baker, Tyler Clapp and Wyatt Buxbaum.
Todd Opp and John Paul Baker helped Buxbaum with the coaching duties.
