Big fifth inning carries Lady Devils over Miles City

By Kevin Miller

Ranger-Review Staff Writer

Miles City shut out the Lady Red Devils through the first four innings in their game on Saturday, but a big three-run fifth carried Glendive to a 4-2 win. The Cowgirls scored first with a run in the bottom of the first and held that 1-0 lead until the pivotal fifth inning. The Lady Devils added an insurance run in the sixth. Miles City threatened in the 7th but would plate just one run.

Wyniah Mintz pitched a complete game five-hitter to earn the win for Glendive. Mintz had to work out of the jam in the seventh to secure the victory for the Devils. The Cowgirls had one run in and two runners on when Mintz struck out Jenna Swope to end the game.

Coach Todd Naasz praised Mintz for her performance, saying “Wyniah did a great job today, limiting Miles City to just five hits. She also had five strikeouts.”

The Red Devil offense was stymied until the fifth when they finally broke through. Mintz started the rally with a leadoff double to left-center. She would steal third and come around to score on a wild pitch.

Sara Hilbert and Lexi Pettersen each had a single in the inning, then executed a double- steal to get to second and third.  Amanda Mittlestadt drove in Hilbert, and Cheyenne Ryan had an RBI single to right that scored Pettersen.

Shay Deines scored the insurance run for Glendive when she led off the sixth with a double to deep left field. Sami Calkins moved Deines to third with a sacrifice. Mintz then drove in Deines with a sacrifice fly to left to make it 4-1.

Naasz added, “Defensively, Shay Deines helped us out with several nice plays in right field.  Other players of the game for us were Cheyenne Ryan and Sarah Temple, who each had two hits in the game.”

The decision over Miles City gave the Lady Red Devils their second conference win. Glendive and Sidney were scheduled to play in Sidney Tuesday.
