The Dawson County High School cross country team competed in State Cross Country Meet in Helena Saturday.
“The highlight of the meet for us was Ashton Jones finishing 12th in the field of 141 runners. All-state is the top 15 ... so Ashton is in the elite group of Montana class A school runners,” Coach Jim Temple said.
Overall, the boys ran as well as they have all season, according to Temple.
The boys team earned seventh place out of 20 Class A teams.
Jones, a junior, earned 12th place at state with a time of 16:39.00. Junior Kolte Copp came in next for the Red Devils, earning 41st place, while teammate Stefan Slehofer, a senior, came in less than a second behind Copp for 42nd place.
“All of our boys ran under 18 minutes in the three mile course, which is as good as any team we have ran there in the last eight seasons,” Temple added.
The girls team took 11th place out of 18 teams.
Leading for the girls was junior Nicole Allerdings. She placed 42nd with a time of 21:27.80. Two freshmen – Emily Kuehn and Liz Holzer – took the second and third places for the DCHS girls’ team. Kuehn came in 44th with a time of 21:29.41 and Holzer held the 64th position with a time of 22:12.97.
“Most of the girls ran close to their best race of the year, so they had a great effort. We have a young girls team and with some extra running next summer they will definitely improve next state meet,” Temple said.
“This was a very enjoyable bunch of young athletes to coach and it is always a little sad to have the season end. They will all be part of other extracurricular activities at DCHS throughout the school year. Coach Carbajal and I would like to thank all the the support from our parents and community,” Temple said.
Three seniors – Slehofer, Dillon Silvernale and Michael Liberatore – finished their DCHS cross country careers at the state meet.
