DCHS track teams near starting line

By Kevin Miller

Ranger-Review Staff Writer

The DCHS track and field teams have been practicing for the past two weeks in preparation for the 2014 season. The Red Devil boys and girls began training on March 17 and will see their first competition at the Wibaux Invitational on April 5. This meet will be held in Glendive at Perham Field.

The Lady Red Devils lack experience with just five letter-winners returning from a year ago. Austyn Copp and Carly Svenvold will lead the way. These two qualified for the State A meet a year ago.  Copp is a distance runner while Svenvold went to state in the 100 meter hurdles and the triple jump. These two Lady Devils are seniors.

The other three returnees that earned a varsity letter last year are Lindsey Ceynar, Sadie Carbajal and Savannah Kettner. Ceynar is a senior and competes in the throwing events. Carbajal, a sophomore, is a distance runner. Kettner, also just a sophomore, is a high jumper. Katie Eastburn (senior sprinter), Savanna Keiser (sophomore thrower) and Layna Silha (sophomore thrower) also participated in track last year.

The Lady Red Devils have 15 girls currently out practicing for this year’s team.

Coach Mike Dryden noted, “Half of our girls’ team has never competed in a high school track meet but the success of our season will be determined by how well we can prepare these newcomers to compete in the Eastern A and how well we train the veteran athletes to perform at the next level.”  Dryden also added, “We are excited by and looking forward to the challenge.”

The Red Devil boys will count on 12 returning lettermen, including nine athletes that qualified for the state meet a year ago.  Colter Bachmeier, John LeSueur, Tanner Schwartz, Taylor Schwartz, Tai Sokoloski and Dillon Silvernale all return after placing at state last season. Bachmeier, LeSueur, Schwartz and Schwartz are all seniors this year. Sokoloski and Silvernale are juniors.

The Devils’ other three athletes that return after competing at the state meet in 2013 are Dalton Larsen, Ashton Jones and Zach Emly. These three are all sophomores. Josef Hageman (senior), Kolte Copp (sophomore) and Kacen French (sophomore) also return after lettering in 2013. There are 31 boys out for the Red Devil track & field team.

Dryden commented on the boys’ squad, “Our returning state qualifiers and state place-winners will need to improve on last season’s performances and some of the other athletes will need to step up as well for our team to reach our goals.”

The rest of the Red Devil coaching staff consists of Sheila Kennedy, Tom McLaren, Jim Person, Jim Temple and Tom Temple.

The annual Elks Meet is scheduled for May 2 and 3.  The Eastern A meet will be in Miles City on May 24. The State A meet is May 30 and 31 in Butte.
