Lady Devils go 2-2 at divisional tourney

The Dawson County High School Lady Red Devils ended their 2014 volleyball season Saturday morning with a loss to Hardin in the Eastern A Divisional Tournament.

The Devils defeated Hardin in their last conference game of the season prior to the tournament and the Lady Bulldogs were out for revenge.

“We didn’t play as well against Hardin as I would have liked. I think knowing it was a loser-out (game) must have been on their minds,” Coach Eva Crockett said.

The Lady Devils went 2-2 during the tournament, defeating Laurel Thursday and Sidney Friday, and taking losses to Billings Central Friday and Hardin Saturday.

“I think that we had great moments and not so great moments, sometimes there is a mental block or whatever you call it when you play a certain team and that is what happened when we played Central,” said Crockett.

The Lady Devils struggled a bit early in the season, but garnered some key conference wins the last week of the season.

The DCHS coach saw her team come together progressively throughout the season.

“Overall, I am very proud of what the girls had accomplished. We really started to peak and come together as a team, and then the season is over,” Crockett said.

“I was very proud of their season and they team they have become.”

The Lady Devils will lose two seniors: Stephanie Carney and Teia Knutson. The losses will be felt, Crockett said, particularly as Knutson is the Lady Devil’s setter, which Crockett compared to a football team’s quarterback.

The good news for next season is this year’s deep bench of young players. Besides the two seniors, the 2014 team consisted of three juniors, with the rest being sophomores and freshmen. Open gym time and camps will be key to having a solid team for 2015, according to Crockett.
