The night started off rocky for Lady Devils volleyball. The freshman and the junior varsity fell to Sidney.
The freshman lost 1-3 and the junior varsity fell in three straight games.
Then the DCHS Pep Band filed in and, along with the cheerleaders, got the crowd fired up.
The varsity took the floor for warm up. They appeared ready for anything the Lady Eagles could throw at them.
But, from the first serve, the Lady Eagles were in charge. They held the lead until the Lady Devils finally took their first lead at 25-24.
The Lady Eagles did not let go easily but lost 26-28.
The second game was all Lady Devils. They won easily at 25-12 following on impressive serving from Knutson and Crockett.
The third game was a repeat of the first game. The Lady Devils fell behind from the first point and struggled. They stayed in the game and managed to pull their focus together and took the last game giving them a straight three game win with 28-26, 25-12 and 25-23.
“We came to play and to win tonight,” stated Coach Eva Crockett.
“Though we started slowly in the first and third games, we played smart,” she added.
Crockett also shared that practice had focused on shaking things up by changing rotations.
The Lady Devils are now 1-1 in conference play and overall 4-2.
In stats for the junior varsity, they had an impressive 88 per cent on serve. They finished with two aces, three kills, two assists, one block, and 37 digs.
The stats for the varsity were 46 digs led by Stephanie Carney with 12; three blocks led by Taya Torres with two; 25 assists led by Teia Knutson with 22; 28 kills led by Torres with 11 and Carney with 7; and six aces let by Marenah Crockett with three and Savanna Keiser with two.
Thursday, Oct. 10, the Lady Devils are on the road to Hardin.
The freshman play at 4 p.m., followed by the junior varsity at 5:30 and varsity at 7 p.m.
