On Tuesday, the Dawson County High School softball team defeated Miles City, 4-3, strengthening their Eastern A Conference record to 7-0 for the season.
It was Senior Day when senior pitcher Carrie Nagle celebrated her final home game in the regular season allowing nine hits during seven innings of play. She let up three runs in the second inning and then unleashed her fastball and curve to shutout the Cowgirls.
Overall, the Lady Red Devils recorded eight hits against pitcher Ariel Porter, earning a run in the first inning and rallying with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to clinch the win.
Nagle struggled at the plate going 0-2 but had one RBI. Senior shortstop Wyniah Mintz showcased her hitting skills with a 3-3 performance that drove in two RBIs, and seniors Cheyenne Fisher, Syrell Dufner, Averie Skillestad and Kenna Begger ended the game with at least one hit each.
Skillestad, who went 1-2, is the team’s “speed in the outfield and is called upon the bunt as well as hit,” DCHS head coach Todd Naasz said. Begger, an All-Conference “slap specialist” who went 2-2, “almost always gets on with a ball that is slapped hard into the ground.”
The latest win puts the girls in good position to finish 10-0 in the conference, Naasz said. That accomplishment would mean receiving a first-round bye in the Eastern A Tournament which will be held in Glendive.
“We are focusing on hitting the ball through the whole order, and continuing to play good defense,” Nassz added.
Moving forward, a doubleheader against Billings Central and Laurel, cancelled last week, has been rescheduled for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Monday in Laurel. The girls are also set to play at 3 p.m. on Thursday in Hardin and then on Friday and Saturday at Laverne Combo Tournament in Butte.
