Janniqua Thomas and Haylee Gallegos, both sophomores at Dawson Community College, were named to the North All-Region team for Region IX for the 2013-2014 basketball season. These two DCC standouts led the Lady Buccaneers to one of the most successful seasons in school history.

Thomas came to Dawson from Falcon High School in Colorado Springs, Colo. In her two years as a Buccaneer she scored 1,025 points. In her sophomore season Thomas led the Lady Bucs in scoring and in rebounding.

Thomas averaged 21.5 points and 9.1 rebounds per game as a sophomore. She shot an amazing 58.3 percent from the floor and 75.6 percent (133-176) from the free throw line.  Thomas was also named to the Region IX All-Tournament team where she led the Bucs to the semifinals. At the regional tournament Thomas averaged 27 points and 11.7 rebounds in three games.

In the opening round Dawson defeated Trinidad State Junior College 88-74. In this contest Thomas scored 21 points, was 7-8 from the line and pulled down 16 rebounds including eight off of the offensive glass.

The Buccaneers picked up a second round win over Otero Junior College by the final of 88-79. Thomas netted 31 points in this victory. She was a perfect 11-11 from the charity stripe and 10-19 from the field.  She also had seven boards.

The Lady Bucs had a heartbreaking 80-76 loss in the semis to Western Wyoming Community College.  Thomas had another outstanding performance with 29 points, 12 rebounds and 3 assists.  She was 9-9 from the line and 10-17 from the floor.

In the three tournament games Thomas scored 81 points and had 35 rebounds.  She was 27-28 (96.4 percent) from the free throw line and 27-53 (51 percent) from the field.

Gallegos also had two outstanding years for the Lady Buccaneers. Gallegos came to DCC from Laurel High School in Laurel. She was the floor general for Coach Clingingsmith. Gallegos logged nearly 1,000 minutes of playing time this season (31.8 min./game).

In her sophomore season Gallegos averaged 11.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 2.4 steals per contest. For the 2013-2014 season she shot 45.8 percent from the field and 76.7 percent (99-129) from the free throw line.

Gallegos was also named one of the top 5 defensive players in the north sub-region of Region IX. She will transfer to Montana Tech in Butte next fall to further her education and her basketball career.

Region IX is made up of a north sub-division and a south sub-division and is part of the NJCAA for junior/community colleges. The Buccaneers play in Division I of the NJCAA. They were co-champions for the 2013-2014 season in the north Region IX.
