On Friday afternoon, the girls basketball team from Dawson County High School lost to Columbia Falls, 57-44, the fall ending a historic season that landed them in the Class A State tournament for the first time since 2009.

Led by Karsen Murphy, DCHS (ranked No. 4 East) played a hard fought game against Columbia Falls (No. 3 West) – last year’s state champions – at the Montana ExpoPark Pacific Steel and Recycling Four Seasons Arena in Great Falls.

Murphy finished as top scorer with 19 points, as Bailey Pearcy put up 10, Walker had 4, Thea Robson made 3 and Jaley Wyse added 2. Overall, the Lady Red Devils shot 40 percent from the court, 23 percent in three-pointers and 45 percent at the foul line in the loser-out game. For comparison, the Wildcats shot 36 percent in three-pointers and 68 percent from the foul line.

Last month, DCHS played six games at the Eastern A Divisional tournament and beat Billings Central to qualify for the State tournament. At State, Havre (No. 1 East), Hardin (2E), Belgrade (3E) and DCHS (4E) battled for the East, as Butte Central (No. 1 West), Browning (2W), Columbia Falls (3W and Hamilton represented the West.

In their first game, DCHS (4E) lost to Butte Central (1W) in the first round, 28-43.

Competition appeared tight until the Maroons outscored the Lady Red Devils by 9 points in the third quarter and then had a 6 point lead in the fourth to maintain the lead and earn the victory. Central’s Kloie Thatcher scored 15 points and had six assists, as her teammate Megan Michelotti added 12 points and 11 rebounds. DCHS’ Murphy led her team once again scoring 8 points.

As  The Ranger-Review went to press, DCHS head coach Kayla Rivas was unavailable for immediate comment.
