Walking tour focuses on history

Take a walk through history on the Glendive Historical Walking Tour.

Walking tour brochures are available at the Glendive Area Chamber of Commerce located at 313 S. Merrill Ave. The tour allows visitors to leisurely explore Glendive’s history while enjoying a pleasant summer stroll.

Trails of history cross at Glendive, from prehistoric fossils found in and around Makoshika State Park to the rich history based on the railroad and oil days.

The town of Glendive was started by the railroad. The small settlement became a permanent town when the first railroad, Northern Pacific Railway, arrived on July 5, 1881. The railroad continues to play a major role in the community. Before the year was over, the population had grown to about 1,500 people.

As the railroad gave Glendive life, the Bell Street Bridge was one of the first bridges erected across the mighty Yellowstone River.

The bridge was claimed an historical site a few years ago and a committee was formed in an effort to make many improvements to the bridge.

Flower pots have been placed near the ends and lights were installed to make the bridge safe for walking at night
. Improvements continue in an effort to entice more people to visit the historic site.

Also on the walking tour people will visit the 1922 Burlington Northern Railroad Depot, the 1915 Chamber of Commerce/Jaycees Clubhouse building, the 1886 Dion building, the 1914 B.N. underpass, the 1914 City Hall, the 1907 Charley Montana Bed and Breakfast, formerly the Krug Mansion, the 1924 Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the 1903 McCone residence, the 1910 Blackstock residence, the 1909 Methodist Church and 1914 parsonage, and the 1935 U.S. Post Office. The architecture of many of these buildings, reminiscent of years gone by, is breathtaking.

Take time to check out the rich history of Glendive on the official walking tour. You’ll be glad you did!
